What causes ice dams, and why the roof is not the problem

An ice dam is a heat problem wearing a roofing costume. Understanding that is what stops you paying to fix the wrong thing.

A ridge of ice builds along the edge of the roof. Icicles hang off the gutter. Then, on a mild afternoon, water appears on a ceiling or at the top of a wall — in a roof that is in perfectly sound condition.

This is one of the few problems in this subject with a completely mechanical explanation, and following it through tells you exactly what to do about it.

The mechanism, step by step

Snow falls and sits on the roof. Snow is a good insulator, so it also holds in whatever heat is coming from below.

Heat escapes from the house into the attic. Through gaps in the ceiling, through thin or compressed insulation, through a hatch that does not seal, around recessed lights, up the open tops of partition walls. That warms the attic, which warms the roof deck.

Snow melts on the middle of the slope, where the roof is above the heated part of the house. The meltwater runs down the roof underneath the remaining snow.

It reaches the eave and refreezes. The eave overhangs outside air and is not above the heated space, so it stays at outdoor temperature. Water arriving there freezes.

Repeat for a few days and the ice at the eave builds into a ridge — the dam.

Water backs up behind it. And this is where it becomes a leak, for a reason worth understanding: a shingle roof sheds running water, it does not hold standing water. Shingles are lapped so that water flowing downhill passes over each joint. Water sitting in a pond has time and capillary action on its side, and it works its way back up under the laps, onto the deck, and then inside.

Why that means the roof is not at fault

Nothing in that sequence involves a defect in the roof covering. The shingles are doing exactly what shingles do. The problem is that they have been asked to do something they were never designed for, and the reason they were asked is that the house is leaking heat.

This is why replacing the roof does not stop ice dams. Households have done it, and had a dam the following winter, because the new covering sheds running water exactly as well as the old one and is equally powerless against a pond.

The tells

Ice-dam water has a distinctive signature:

  • It appears during a thaw, or on a sunny afternoon after a cold night, and stops when things refreeze.
  • It shows up at the top of an exterior wall or in a room corner, because the water is entering near the eave rather than mid-slope.
  • It is seasonal and does not happen in summer rain.
  • There is visible ice at the eaves, and often thick icicles.

One extra observation that tells you a lot for free: look at the roof after a snowfall and compare it with the neighbours. A roof that clears of snow quickly, or has bare patches while others stay white, is a roof losing heat. Even more telling is a roof that clears in stripes — those stripes are usually following the rafters, where the insulation between them is thinner or compressed.

What actually changes it

Because it is a heat problem, the durable answers are heat answers, in this order.

Air sealing the ceiling plane. The single biggest contributor in most houses is not poor insulation but warm air leaking straight up through gaps. Sealing those is usually the cheapest intervention and the most effective.

Insulation that is actually continuous. Not just thick in the middle, but present and uncompressed right out to the top of the exterior walls — which is the exact area that matters here and the exact area most often skimped.

Ventilation that keeps the deck cold. Outside air moving from the soffits to the ridge carries away the heat that does get through. And note the catch: pushing insulation out to the eaves to fix the second point is the classic way of blocking the soffit vents and wrecking the third. Baffles exist for exactly this.

Heated cables, membranes and the rest of the winter hardware have their place, particularly on a problem area of an awkward roof, but they manage the symptom rather than removing the cause. A cable melts a channel through the dam; it does not stop the snow melting in the first place, and it runs on electricity every winter for the life of the house.

The part we will not help with

Ice-dam season generates an enormous amount of advice about getting up on the roof with a hammer, a hatchet, a shovel or boiling water. We do not publish any of it.

A roof covered in snow and ice is about the least safe surface you will encounter around a house. Chipping at ice reliably takes granules and sometimes whole shingles with it, so the common outcome is a dam removed and a roof damaged. And the height problem is unchanged by the fact that it is your own house rather than a jobsite — professionals working at that height are required to have fall protection because the hazard is well established.

The tool that does the useful part from the ground is a roof rake: a long-handled rake that pulls snow off the lower few feet of the roof, which is where the dam forms. Removing that snow before it can melt and refreeze does most of the work, with both feet on the ground. It is not a solution — the solution is upstairs, in the insulation and the air sealing — but it is the sensible thing to reach for in the middle of a bad winter.

And in serious conditions the honest answer is that steam removal by people who do it for a living exists, works, and does not damage the roof.
