Overflowing gutters: what the overflow point tells you

Where a gutter goes over is more informative than the fact that it goes over. It is worth watching it happen once.

Gutters are treated as a chore, and they are actually one of the more useful diagnostic instruments on a house. The next time it rains properly, go and look at yours while it is working. Where the water escapes tells you what is wrong, and the four patterns point at four different things.

Over the front edge, along a long stretch

Water sheeting over the outer lip across a run usually means the gutter cannot cope, and there are three reasons for that.

It is full. The obvious one, and the most common. Leaves, needles, seed pods and roof grit compact into a mat that fills the trough and leaves an inch of usable depth.

The fall is wrong. A gutter is hung with a slight slope towards the downspout. If a section has sagged — usually because the fascia behind it has softened and lost its grip on the fixings — water ponds at the low point and goes over there in heavy rain.

It is genuinely undersized for the area of roof draining into it, or there are too few downspouts. This is the one to suspect when a gutter is clean, level and still overflows in a real downpour, and it is more common on additions and on roofs that have been extended.

Over the back, against the wall

This one is worth knowing because it is often not a gutter fault at all, and people replace perfectly good gutters over it.

Water is supposed to leave the roof edge and land in the trough. If the shingles do not overhang far enough, or the drip edge is missing — the strip of metal at the roof edge whose job is to throw water clear — then surface tension carries the water around the edge and it runs down the back of the gutter onto the fascia instead.

The signature is unmistakable once you know it: a wet stripe down the fascia, staining on the wall below, and rot starting at the back of the gutter while the front looks fine. It happens in ordinary rain, not just downpours, which distinguishes it from a capacity problem.

At one specific point, every time

A single, repeatable overflow point is a local problem: a blockage right there, a sag right there, or a seam that has opened. Sectional gutters have joints and joints fail; a persistent drip from the same spot between rains is usually a seam rather than an overflow.

Nothing coming out of the downspout

If the gutter is full and the downspout is dry, the blockage is in the outlet or in the pipe itself. This is common at the top elbow, where debris arrives and turns a corner.

What is in the gutter is evidence too

Worth a look when they are cleared. Coarse sand the colour of the roof is shingle granules, and that is the roof reporting on itself rather than the gutter. In the months after a new roof this is normal excess. Years in, with bald patches visible from the ground, it means the covering is losing its UV protection.

What happens if it is left

The damage runs in a predictable sequence, and it accelerates.

Water going over the back rots the fascia, the board the gutter hangs on. A softening fascia loses its grip on the fixings, so the gutter starts pulling away — which worsens the fall, which makes it overflow more, which rots the fascia faster. Persistent overflow at one point saturates the soffit below, and a soft soffit is both a moisture problem and the end of your attic intake ventilation, because that is where the vents live. Blocking the intake then feeds the attic moisture problem, which is how a neglected gutter ends up being a damp ceiling two winters later.

In cold climates there is one more link: a gutter packed solid holds water at the eave, which freezes, which gives an ice dam a head start.

Gutter guards

Briefly, because they are heavily marketed. They reduce how often gutters need clearing; none of them eliminates it, fine debris gets through most designs, and some types make the eventual clearing harder because they have to come off first. They are a maintenance-interval decision, not a solution.
