Roof and Attic is operated by an individual based in Spain and is written for readers in the United States. The operator is a publisher, not a contractor: this site does not carry out, arrange, broker or supervise roofing, gutter work, chimney work, insulation, attic ventilation or mold remediation of any kind, anywhere, and is not a licensed contractor, roofer, structural engineer or industrial hygienist.
What this site is
Roof and Attic publishes independent, general-interest explanations about the water that gets into a home from above: how and where roofs leak, what ceiling stains and shingle wear tend to mean, how flashing at chimneys, skylights and valleys fails, why attics condense and what that looks like, how attic ventilation is meant to work, what causes ice dams, and what gutters and eave details are telling you.
What this site is not — please read this one
Nothing on this site identifies mold. Mold cannot be identified from a photograph, a description or a smell, and species cannot be distinguished by eye. Where we discuss growth we describe it as growth and treat it as evidence of persistent moisture. Confirming what something is requires sampling by a qualified party, and that wording is deliberate throughout.
Nothing on this site assesses your roof structure. We explain what a sagging ridge or a deflecting slope generally indicates so that you can describe yours accurately. Whether a particular structure is safe, and what it needs, is a judgement for a licensed structural engineer who has seen it — ideally one who is independent of whoever would sell the repair.
This site deliberately never tells you to get onto your roof, and it publishes no step-by-step instructions for working at height: not for replacing shingles, not for clearing valleys or gutters, not for chipping ice from an eave, and not for installing a temporary cover. Everything here is written to be checked from the ground, from a ladder set at the eaves, or from inside the attic. That is editorial policy rather than an oversight, and the reason is stated on the pages themselves.
Nothing on this site is professional advice, and it is not a substitute for a licensed contractor, engineer or inspector. It is general information written without knowledge of your property, your soil, your climate or your circumstances.
In the United States, building requirements are set locally. Attic ventilation ratios, limits on the number of roof covering layers, ice barrier requirements, wind and hail provisions and permitting all vary by state and by jurisdiction. Where we describe them we do so in general terms and point you at your own local building department — we do not certify what is lawful or compliant for you, and we do not publish a national figure for a rule that is set locally.
This site publishes no medical content. It does not describe symptoms, diagnose conditions, assess exposure or offer any opinion on health outcomes, including any relating to mold or damp. If your concern is health rather than the building, that is a matter for a medical practitioner and for your state or local health department.
This site offers no insurance advice of any kind — not on coverage, not on claims, not on whether a particular event might be covered. That is a question for your insurer or an appropriately licensed adviser, and it is outside what we write about.
This site deliberately does not explain how to carry out structural repair — sistering or replacing rafters, repairing a deck that has lost strength, or temporarily supporting a roof while a member is replaced. Those omissions are editorial policy, not oversights.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator accepts no liability for loss, damage or injury arising from action taken, or not taken, on the basis of material published on this site. You use the information here at your own risk and on your own judgement.
Prices and running costs
As a matter of editorial policy, this site does not publish prices, hourly rates, quotes, or the cost of roofing, repair, replacement, remediation or equipment. They vary by region, by pitch, by access and by year, and a figure left on a web page becomes misleading with time. Where money is relevant we explain what drives it and what to ask, and send you to a current source.
Affiliate links and independence
Some links to retailers may be affiliate links, meaning the operator may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no additional cost to you. Where that applies it is marked on the page. Affiliate arrangements do not influence what is recommended, and the operator has no commercial relationship with any roofing contractor, gutter or chimney company, remediation firm, inspector, manufacturer, brand or trade association.
Intellectual property
The text, structure, design and original graphics of this site belong to the operator unless stated otherwise. You are welcome to quote briefly with attribution and a link. Wholesale reproduction of pages is not permitted.

The operator does not control those sites and is not responsible for their content, their availability or any changes made to them after we linked. A link is not an endorsement.
