The ceiling is wet and it hasn't rained: the condensation case
This is the most misdiagnosed problem in the whole subject, and the one where a roofer can honestly find nothing wrong.
A ceiling gets wet. It has not rained for a week. The roof was replaced four years ago and looks fine. Somebody comes out, goes up, finds nothing, and you are left with a wet ceiling and no explanation.
What has almost certainly happened is that the water was never outside. It came from inside the house, went up, and came back down as a liquid.
How a house makes its own rain
Everything you do in a house puts water vapour into the air. Showers, cooking, laundry, drying clothes indoors, houseplants, a damp basement or crawl space below, and the simple fact of people breathing. That vapour moves with the air, and warm air rises. It leaks upward through every gap in the ceiling — around light fittings, the loft hatch, pipe penetrations, the tops of partition walls.
In the attic it meets the underside of the roof deck, which in winter is close to outside temperature. Air can only hold so much water at a given temperature, and when warm damp air touches a cold surface it drops below that threshold and the water condenses out. On a cold enough night it forms frost on the sheathing and on the shanks of the nails poking through. Then the sun comes out, or the weather turns, and all of it melts at once.
That is the sudden soaking. No rain, no hole, a ceiling wet through in an hour.
The tells
Condensation and a leak leave different evidence, and once you know the difference it is not subtle.
- A leak is local. Condensation is general. This does most of the work. A leak comes through one place and makes a concentrated wet trail. Condensation forms on every cold surface at once, so the staining on the deck is spread broadly across a wide area, often across the whole north slope, rather than concentrated around one penetration.
- Frost. If there is frost on the underside of the deck or on nail tips on a cold morning, the question is settled. Roofs do not leak frost.
- Timing against weather. Leaks track rain. Condensation tracks cold, and the flood tracks the thaw.
- Wet insulation on top. Water from a leak tends to soak the insulation in a stripe or a patch below the entry point. Condensation drips off the deck fairly evenly and dampens the top surface broadly.
- Rusty nail tips or dark staining around every nail is a condensation signature.
Where the moisture is coming from
Usually from somewhere specific and fixable. The most common single culprit is a bathroom extractor fan that vents into the attic rather than out through the roof or a wall. It is remarkably common, including in fairly new houses, and it amounts to pumping a shower's worth of steam directly into a cold space several times a day. A dryer duct doing the same is the second. After that: a duct that terminates near a vent but not into it, a disconnected flexible run, an uncovered loft hatch, recessed lights that are not airtight, and a damp basement or crawl space sending moisture up through the whole house.
Go up and look at where each extractor duct actually ends. That one check resolves a surprising share of these cases.
Why fixing the roof does nothing
This is the expensive part of the misdiagnosis. There is nothing wrong with the roof covering, so replacing it, sealing it, or coating it changes nothing at all — and if the new work involves reducing ventilation, it makes the problem worse. Households have been through a full roof replacement and still had a wet ceiling the following February, because the cause was a fan duct and an unsealed hatch.
The real fix has two halves and they go in order. First, stop the moisture getting up there: vent the fans to the outside, seal the air paths through the ceiling. Second, let the attic get rid of what still arrives, which is the job of balanced intake and exhaust ventilation. Sealing comes first; ventilating a space that has an open pipeline of warm damp air feeding it is treating the symptom.

The awkward part
Nobody owns this problem. It is not a roofing job, it is not a plumbing job, and the person who arrives to look at your roof is not being dishonest when they say the roof is fine. It sits between building envelope, ventilation and insulation, which is why it goes round in circles for years in some houses. Knowing what you are describing is most of the way to getting it solved.
